Second Starbucks store in downtown Sacramento is closing: ‘We thank every one of you’
Another Starbucks location is closing in the Sacramento area — and this one is near the state Capitol building.
The Starbucks store at 1123 12th St. in downtown Sacramento will serve customers drinks and small bites for the last time on Tuesday, according to signage posted on the coffee shop’s door.
This will be the third coffee shop tied to the Seattle-based chain to close in the Sacramento area in two months. Starbucks recently shut down locations in downtown Sacramento and East Sacramento.
Why did Starbucks close location in downtown Sacramento?
The announcement posted on the downtown Starbucks store’s door thanked customers for their monetary support but did not specify a reason for the closing.
“We thank each and every one of you who has supported us and created a welcoming space for all,” Starbucks representatives wrote in a farewell message to customers.
The shop, which is across the street from the state Capitol building, shares a property with Hyatt Regency Sacramento.
Starbucks representatives confirmed the closing in an email on Monday before telling a Sacramento Bee reporter to contact Hyatt Regency Sacramento, which operated the licensed coffee shop, for more information.
“Under Starbucks licensing model, licensees are positioned as business partners, who not only operate stores but also invest in and drive innovation at the company ... and growth in their markets and across the globe,” Starbucks said in a 2022 news release.
At the time, Starbucks had more than 17,000 licensed stores including 6,500 in the United States.
Hyatt Regency Sacramento had not returned a request for comment as of Monday afternoon.
Where else have coffee shops closed?
Starbucks recently cut the lights to two coffee shops in Sacramento, but didn’t offer reasons for the closures.
The Starbucks at 1401 Alhambra Blvd. in East Sacramento marked its last day in operation on April 20.
One month later, the coffee shop at 630 K St. in Downtown Commons closed.
Both Starbucks locations posted farewell messages on their doors, telling customers they would be missed and redirecting them to a nearby site.
The Bee reached out to the coffee chain following each closure and received similar replies: “As a standard course of business, we regularly evaluate our store portfolio to determine how we can best meet our community and customers’ needs and ensure partners are supported in crafting beverages in a warm and welcoming environment.”
Before the closures, both Starbucks locations trimmed their hours following safety concerns.
Since 2020, the Sacramento Police Department has received more than 300 calls for service to the Alhambra Blvd. site, said Officer Cody Tapley, an agency spokesman. The calls were for various reasons, including theft, panhandling, and loitering.
In 2023, the Downtown Sacramento location became the first in the region to unionize.
What is Starbucks? Where are shop locations?
Founded in the 1970s, Starbucks describes itself as a destination for roasted coffee beans, and tea and spices from around the world.
Its drink menu is packed with options, from hot and cold coffees to iced tea and lemonades.
The food list features sandwiches, baked goods, oatmeal and yogurt.
There are currently more than 40 locations in Sacramento, including sites in supermarkets and hotels.
