Want to escape Sacramento heat wave? Here are 5 day-trip destinations with cooler weather

Sacramento is in for another stretch of scorching temperatures, with an excessive heat warning in effect until Tuesday.

High temperatures near 110 degrees are expected Friday and Sunday in the capital city, while the National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 104 degrees on Sunday.

If you want to escape the Sacramento Valley heat, there are several day trips you can take to places with significantly cooler climates.

Here are five destinations within a four-hour drive of Sacramento that are forecast to have temperatures below 90 degrees this weekend.

Take a day trip to Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe will have a high temperature near 82 degrees this week, with a low temperature around 61 degrees, according to the weather forecast.

According to Tripadvisor, the top attractions and activities in Lake Tahoe include the Mount Tallac hiking trail, swimming at Emerald Bay State Park and strolling through downtown Truckee.

The drive from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe takes less than two hours, according to Google Maps.

Travel to San Francisco

This weekend, San Francisco is forecast to see a high near 78 degrees and a low around 55.

According to Tripadvisor, the Bay Area city is home to an abundance of attractions, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39.

San Francisco is roughly a two-hour drive from Sacramento, according to Google Maps.

Visit Carmel-By-The-Sea

Along a scenic stretch of ocean cliffs, coastal forests and beaches sits a quaint city.

Carmel-By-The-Sea has several things for visitors to do, Tripadvisor said.

Attractions in the Monterey County city include the Point Lobos trail, Carmel Mission Basilica church and museum and Carmel Beach, a white sand beach that allows dogs.

The high will be near 78 degrees in Carmel-By-The-Sea this weekend, according to the forecast, while the low will be around 54.

Carmel-By-The-Sea is about less than a four-hour drive from Sacramento, according to Google Maps.

Take a drive to Monterey

North of Carmel-By-The-Sea, Monterey will have a high near 73 degrees this weekend, with a low near 55.

According to Tripadvisor, things to do in the coastal Monterey County city include the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, a waterfront district known for its dining and scenic strolls.

The drive from Sacramento to Monterey lasts roughly three hours, Google Maps said.

Cruise to Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is located on the northern edge of Monterey Bay.

This weekend, Santa Cruz is forecast to see a high near 86 degrees and a low around 56.

According to Tripadvisor, things to do in Santa Cruz County include the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the Mystery Spot, a gravitational anomaly attraction located in the redwood forests, and Pleasure Point Beach, a popular surf spot.

The drive from Sacramento to Santa Cruz takes less than three hours, according to Google Maps.
