A woman was killed Friday after her car drifted across an Elk Grove roadway and crashed into a field, according to police.

The motorist was the only occupant of a Nissan SUV, which was going northbound on West Stockton Boulevard, which parallels Highway 99. For an unknown reason, the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane just before 7 p.m near Whitelock Parkway before “colliding into the field on the west side of the roadway,” the Elk Grove Police Department said in a news release.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from the Cosumnes Community Service District Fire Department.

Her identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once relatives are notified of her death.

An investigation of the crash was ongoing, police said.
