Placer County deputies issue evacuation warning for Athens Fire burning near Lincoln
A fast-moving grass fire was burning Friday afternoon in a rural area north of Roseville, prompting Placer County sheriff’s officials to briefly issue an evacuation warning.
The Athens Fire had burned about 260 acres of dry grass and had “a dangerous rate of spread,” the Cal Fire Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit said in social media posts. Cal Fire officials said the grass fire spread from a vehicle at Athens Avenue near Fiddyment Road; it was reported at 100 acres at 2:15 p.m.
Cal Fire just after 3 p.m. said the fire was 50% contained.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued the evacuation warning at 2:20 p.m. Friday for structures along Athens Avenue east to Industrial Avenue; those along Industrial Avenue south to Sunset Boulevard; and those along Athens Avenue south to Sunset Boulevard.
Sheriff’s officials said they had notified Thunder Valley Casino Resort, but staff and customers at the casino were not being evacuated at the time.
Authorities had closed Sunset Boulevard at Cincinnati Avenue, Athens at North Foothills and Fiddyment Road at Sunset Boulevard.
At 3:50 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office announced that the evacuation warning had been lifted.
