The bodies of a father and daughter were found after a fire ripped through an apartment unit Monday afternoon in south Sacramento’s Parkway neighborhood.

Sacramento Fire Department crews were called just before 4 p.m. to the blaze on the 5400 block of Mack Road and arrived to find flames and heavy smoke pouring from a second-story unit. A second alarm was called for the fire that affected at least one unit in the Stonegate apartment complex just west of Center Parkway.

While crews initially said all of the building’s occupants were able to evacuate safely, firefighters later said they had found the bodies of a man and a girl in one room of the burned-out apartment.

The victims were identified as Nilesh Naavya Jeet, 43, and his daughter, 9-year-old Nivisha Naavya Jeet, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office said.

The cause of the fire was ongoing, fire officials said.

Friends and family of the victim have started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help Jeet’s wife with funeral and other expenses: “Thank you for your compassion and support through this difficult time,” the fundraiser’s organizer wrote. The drive runs through July 31 and is hoping to raise $25,000.
