A man was transported to a hospital Sunday morning in critical condition after a firework exploded against his body, causing severe injuries to his chest and hands, according to the Sacramento Fire Department.

A Fire Department spokesperson said that the man, who was camping with his brother near the 800 block of Vinci Avenue in North Sacramento’s Robla neighborhood, lit off a firework in his hands, which resulted in an explosion.

“He’ll be lucky if he has hands when he’s done,” said Capt. Justin Sylvia.

The explosion also sparked a half-acre grass fire. A crew was dispatched to the scene about 8 a.m. and the fire was put out within 30 minutes.

The man’s brother told police that his brother saw a firework land in the field near their campsite Saturday night. The following morning, he found the firework and lit it, resulting in the explosion.

Sylvia said that no charges have been filed and that the investigation is ongoing.
