Jet ski crash kills teen and injures 19-year-old on Northern California lake
One teen died and another was injured while riding a jet ski Saturday on a Northern California lake after they were struck by another jet ski, sheriff’s officials said.
About 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Boating Safety Unit deputies responded to reports of two jet skis that crashed on Lake Shasta in Shannon Cove near Sacramento Point.
Upon arrival to the shoreline, deputies found an 18-year-old man with injuries to his chin and face and a 19-year-old man with a knee injury, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release.
Sheriff’s officials said the deputies learned the two injured teens were riding a jet ski when they were hit by another jet ski operated by a 21-year-old male, who did not require medical attention after the crash.
The deputies took the two injured teens to Bridge Bay Marina, where medics were waiting. After arriving at the marina, the 18-year-old became unresponsive.
Sheriff’s officials said medics began immediate treatment and took the injured teens to a hospital. The 18-year-old was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Shasta County Coroner’s Office will release his name after his family has been notified.
The jet ski crash remained under investigation by the Boating Safety Unit, sheriff’s officials said.
