Temperatures are about to drop in Sacramento as rain moves back in. Here’s what to expect

Break out those umbrellas, Sacramento.

The capital region is about to get rained on as temperatures drop this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

“We’ve got a couple of systems coming through,” Craig Shoemaker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sacramento office.

The last time downtown Sacramento saw measurable rainfall was on Aug. 24, when the area recorded 0.04 inches.

The first sprinkles will arrive late in the afternoon on Sunday, Shoemaker said, with showers continuing into the following morning.

He said Sacramento will receive around a 10th of an inch of precipitation, with areas closer to the Sierra Nevada foothills seeing up to two 10ths of an inch.

Temperatures in the capital region will be “a lot cooler” as that weather system rolls through, he said.

“We’re talking about high temperatures falling back into the 70s, if you can believe that,” Shoemaker said.

A second system will arrive on Wednesday afternoon, bringing another chance of showers.

Once again, the Sacramento region could get 0.1 inch to 0.2 inches of rain.

Overnight lows next week will be in the mid- to upper 50s, Shoemaker said, while highs will dip into the upper 70s once more.

“It’s a nice change from all the hot weather we’ve been having,” Shoemaker said, noting that summer 2024 was the warmest summer on record in downtown Sacramento.

The rain is poised to return on Wednesday.

Is more wet weather on the way?

Although Sacramento doesn’t always see rain in September, “This isn’t terribly unusual,” Shoemaker said, noting that a similar phenomenon happens every three or four years.

“It’s just a welcome break in the heat,” he said.

However, he cautioned, “This is not going to be a pattern.”

The Sacramento area is looking at a warming trend heading into the last week of September, according to Shoemaker.

Highs will likely be in the 90s in late September and early October, he said.
