A California Highway Patrol officer swooped in Thursday night to rescue an injured owl stranded in south Sacramento County, authorities said..

Officer Matthew Hang spotted the bird, sporting different shades of brown, injured in the middle of Twin Cities and Bruceville roads in south Sacramento County, the CHP said in a social media post. The area is about a mile away from the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center jail facility.

Hang pulled over and removed the owl from harm’s way until Sacramento County animal control officers came to retrieve the bird.

“A big thank you to Officer Hang for protecting all creatures, great and small!” CHP officials wrote.
