Rain is returning to Sacramento along with a temperature drop. When will showers start?

Rain is set to return to the Sacramento area along with a big drop in temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

The capital region is expected to see rain showers starting on Sunday, the agency said.

“Right now, we’re expecting rain to impact (the area) late Sunday morning through the afternoon hours,” Dakari Anderson, meteorologist with the weather service’s Sacramento office.

Weekend showers could dampen the 2024 Kaiser Permanente Ironman California, which will bring thousands of athletes and spectators to Sacramento on Sunday.

It wouldn’t be the first time the triathlon has faced wet weather.

Sacramento’s first planned Ironman in 2021 was canceled minutes before its start due to “bomb cyclone” that brought significant rain to the region, The Sacramento Bee previously reported, and afternoon showers soaked the Ironman race in 2023.

What’s in the latest forecast for Sacramento?

Thursday was expected to be sunny with a high temperature near 75 degrees and an overnight low temperature around 49 degrees, according to the National Weather Service’s latest seven-day forecast.

Friday will be partly sunny with a high near 76 and a low around 48.

Saturday will start out sunny, the weather service said, before clouds roll in at night.

The high that day will be near 77, and the low will be around 58.

When will rain return? How much will we get?

According to the weather service, there’s a 40% chance of showers on Sunday, mainly after 11 a.m. The high will be near 74.

More showers could return Sunday night, which will see a low around 50.

Dakari said the Sacramento metropolitan area will see mostly sprinkles, with precipitation amounts on the “hundredths of an inch scale.”

Areas north and east of Sacramento, including Auburn, Folsom, Placerville and Yuba City, can expect under a 10th of an inch of rain.

According to the weather service, there’s a “slight chance of showers” on Monday after 11 a.m. and before 11 p.m.

The day will be mostly sunny, with a high near 67 and a low around 49.

Monday marks a cooling trend for the Sacramento area, according to the weather service.

“We’re expecting temperatures to cool below normal, starting early next week,” the weather service said in a post on X on Thursday, Oct. 24.

Sunny skies are expected Tuesday, when the high could reach 67 and the low could drop to around 45.

Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 67, the weather service said.

What’s next?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center says below-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation is likely in Northern California from Tuesday, Oct. 29, to Saturday, Nov. 2.

“Long term, we’re on a dryer pattern,” Anderson said. “Hopefully, we see more rain moving into Sacramento as the fall and winter progresses.”
