Law enforcement recovered a dead body Thursday found at a popular Northern California canyon.

Two people at Lookout Point, 4117 Skyway between Chico and Paradise, peered over the popular location and called 911 after spotting a vehicle and a person, said Cal Fire spokesman Capt. Jacob Gillian.

The Butte County search and rescue team, Chico Fire Department, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and Cal Fire arrived at the incident initially for a rescue operation, Gillian said.

Rescuers found a dead person at the bottom of the canyon and, with the help of a Sheriff’s Office helicopter, hoisted the body up about 100 feet.

It’s unclear how long the man had been in the canyon, Gillian said. The body has not been identified pending family notification by the Butte County Coroner’s Office.
