A major road in West Sacramento has a new name. Here’s why
It looks like Christoper Cabaldon has a direct route to the state Capitol.
And that’s regardless of the outcome of the former West Sacramento mayor’s campaign for the California Senate’s 3rd District. (He was leading his race against Republican Thom Bogue, 61% to 39% on Wednesday.)
The city on Wednesday unveiled a street sign for Cabaldon Parkway, the new name for the road that connects Highway 50 to the Tower Bridge. The route, previously known as Tower Bridge Gateway, turns into Capitol Mall after crossing the bridge.
Cabaldon was first elected to the West Sacramento City Council in 1996 and served as mayor from 1998-2020. He is credited with bringing to the city an Ikea store and the Sacramento River Cats, who play in the ballpark on the Cabaldon Parkway route that will host the Athletics starting next season.
“What a really cool moment — to have literally the street where our renaissance, but also where my contribution here in West Sacramento began, be dedicated in my honor,” said Cabaldon.
Caltrans in 2001 relinquished the half-mile freeway route once known as Highway 275 to West Sacramento, which then worked to transform it into a city street with crosswalks, traffic signals and landscaping.
