An elderly couple is in critical condition Tuesday after suffering serious wounds during a house fire in the Northgate neighborhood, according to the Sacramento Fire Department.

Firefighters were called about 3 p.m to the 3200 block of Normington Drive for reports of a fire. Heavy fire had consumed most of the home when firefighters arrived, authorities said.

The victims, a husband and wife in their 70s, had fled the home, but suffered critical burn wounds, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Justin Sylvia.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
