Pair of raccoons stuck in restaurant grease trap rescued by Auburn wildlife nonprofit
Two young raccoons were rescued in Truckee after falling into a restaurant’s grease trap, according to the Gold Country Wildlife Rescue in Auburn.
The two critters became stuck after the restaurant forgot to lock up the grease trap, the wildlife rescue said on Wednesday.
The raccoons were covered in grease and emotionally distressed. It took several baths to clean the furry friends, the Gold Country Wildlife Rescue said. Currently, the raccoons are clean, eating and being taken care of.
“Our amazing team of wildlife care technicians jumped into action, pulled out the bathing supplies, and began to gently remove the grease from these two raccoons,” the animal shelter said in a Facebook post. “While they were very stressed during their first day in care, they are now eating well and are continuing to receive baths, as it will take many washings to remove all of the grease from their fur.”
Gold Country Wildlife Rescue is a nonprofit dedicated to “rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife,” according to its website. They are permitted through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
