Bay Area woman, Nevada man killed in Thanksgiving crash on California’s Highway 50
A Bay Area woman was among two people killed in a head-on crash in the Sierra that closed Highway 50 near Echo Summit for hours on Thanksgiving night.
California Highway Patrol officers said a Toyota sport utility vehicle headed westbound and a Chevrolet Traverse SUV heading eastbound collided just after 5:30 p.m. just west of Johnson Pass. The crash was about 2 miles west of Echo Summit. Investigators on Friday were still determining what caused the fatal wreck.
The woman, 50, of Fremont, was a passenger in a Toyota sport utility vehicle traveling west on Highway 50, said CHP officials. Three other passengers in the SUV, including two women, ages 64 and 60; and a man, 26, suffered moderate injuries in the crash. The SUV’s driver, identified by CHP officers as a 28-year-old man from Kirkland, Washington, suffered major injuries in the collision.
The driver of the second vehicle, an 84-year-old man from Wellington, Nevada, was also killed in the collision. Their names were being withheld pending notification of family members.
The CHP and Caltrans reopened the El Dorado County highway before 10:30 p.m.
