National drugstore chain Walgreens is closing two more stores in Sacramento.

The company plans to shut down its locations at 1401 Broadway near Tower Cafe and 7155 24th St. near Florin Road, as first reported by the Sacramento Business Journal.

Both locations are expected to close in January.

What is Walgreens?

Founded by Charles Walgreens more than a century ago, Walgreens is a health care, pharmacy and retail brand that offers everyday products and in-house pharmacies, according to its website.

Walgreens’ parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, owns more than 12,500 locations in the United States, Europe and Latin American countries.

That includes nearly 30 locations in the greater Sacramento area.

The company’s portfolio of consumer brands includes Boots, Duane Reade, the No7 Beauty Company and Benavides in Mexico.

In March 2023, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced California would not renew a multi-million dollar contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy chain said it would not dispense abortion pills in some states.

Why are Sacramento drugstore locations closing?

Walgreens Boots Alliance announced in October that it plans to shut down approximately 1,200 locations over the next three years due to declining prescription drug payments and online competitors.

That includes approximately 500 store closures in 2025.

The company plans to focus on “stabilizing the retail pharmacy by optimizing our footprint, controlling operating costs, improving cash flow and continuing to address reimbursement models to ... preserve patient access for the future,” Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO Tim Wentworth said in a news release.

“This turnaround will take time, but we are confident it will yield significant financial and consumer benefits over the long term,” Wentworth said.

Which other local Walgreens stores closed?

In addition to the most recent closures, Walgreens has closed some of its other stores in the Sacramento region.

The Broadway location temporarily closed in July after a shooting that left two people hospitalized, a company spokesperson said at the time.

Walgreens locations that have permanently closed in 2024 included:

Citrus Heights

6199 Sunrise Blvd.

North Highlands

6819 Watt Ave.

Sacramento

840 El Camino Ave.

Placerville
