Will trash pickup be delayed this holiday season in Sacramento? Keep these dates in mind
Many businesses and services around the Sacramento area — from grocery stores to banks and post offices — will be closed during the holidays or only open for special hours.
What does that mean for garbage collection? Will Christmas Day and New Year’s Day delay trash pickup for Sacramento residents?
Here’s what to expect:
Will holidays delay trash pickup in Sacramento area?
“Regular residential garbage, yard waste and recycling collection service will occur on holidays,” the city of Sacramento said on its website.
However, City Hall and most city offices will be open for a half day on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24, and closed for Christmas on Wednesday, Dec. 25.
City offices will also be closed for New Year’s Day on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
You can check the collection calendar on the city’s website for more information about waste services.
Republic Services of Sacramento, which provides waste collection services in Old Sacramento, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove and Rancho Cordova, said it will have “absolutely no services” on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
“For commercial customers who have a regular service schedule on Christmas Day, service will be the following day,” Republic Services said on its website said. “For residential customers, all services will be delayed by one day for that holiday and the remainder of the week.”
Christmas Day, Dec. 25, falls on a Wednesday in 2024.
What is my garbage collection schedule?
Trash collection services for Republic Services residential customers will follow a normal schedule on Monday, Dec. 23, and Tuesday, Dec. 24.
The garbage collection for the rest of the week, including Christmas Day on Wednesday, is as follows:
- Residents whose regular pickup day is Wednesday will be served on Thursday.
- Those with regular Thursday pick-up dates will see waste collection shift to Friday.
- Residents whose trash collection day is on Friday will get a visit from the garbage truck on Saturday.
The same schedule applies to New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, which falls on a Wednesday in 2025.
