Cyclist dies from injuries after being struck by vehicle in Citrus Heights, police say

Roadway fatality

A cyclist who was struck by a vehicle late Monday in Citrus Heights died at a hospital.

The 9:46 p.m. collision happened on Van Maren Road near Mercedes Avenue, said Citrus Heights police. A number of 911 calls brought officers to the scene to find the cyclist lying in the roadway.

Emergency responders rushed the injured person to Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael where the person died. The vehicle’s driver stayed on scene and cooperated with authorities, Citrus Heights police said.

The crash remained under investigation early Tuesday, but Citrus Heights police said alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the collision.

The cyclist’s name has not been released pending notification of family members by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Van Maren Road between Donegal and Bremen drives was closed for several hours late Monday to allow officers to investigate the incident.
