Two men were arrested in Galt on New Year’s Eve after attempting to steal an ATM, police said.

Galt Police Department officers responded to a burglary alarm at a Golden 1 Credit Union ATM kiosk in the 600 block of Carol Drive just before midnight on Tuesday, according to a news release posted to social media.

Police said the alarm company told their communications center there was video surveillance footage showing a man walking back and forth in front of the ATM and that someone had possibly spray painted over the camera.

The Golden 1 ATM is located at 640 Carol Drive in Galt near Pizza Guys and Galt Mini Mart and Liquor.

According to Galt police, an officer arrived to the scene and noticed a suspect flee from the location and get into the passenger seat of a burgundy BMW with no license plate that was parked on the shoulder of northbound Highway 99, just west of the ATM machine.

The driver of the BMW started to drive on Highway 99 northbound, Galt police said, and a “high-risk” traffic stop was conducted near Twin Cities Road and East Stockton Boulevard. Both were detained.

Authorities at the original scene learned the suspects entered the main electrical cabinet of the building and turned off the main breaker, shutting off power to the ATM, Galt police said.

“The suspects left behind a gas-powered concrete abrasive cutter, which was collected as evidence,” Galt police said in the news release. “It was determined one of the suspects cut the chain link fence on the rear of the property to gain easier access to the ATM machine and back to the getaway, suspect vehicle.”

Officers found both suspects in possession of scanner applications used to monitor law enforcement radio channels and two-way radios to communicate with each other.

One suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy, possession of burglary tools and parole violation, Galt police said. The other was arrested on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy, possession of burglary tools and possession of a controlled substance.

Galt police said both men were transported to Sacramento County Main Jail and are in custody until their arraignment in Sacramento Superior Court, which is scheduled for Friday.
