Pedestrian fatally struck by tractor-trailer on busy freeway south of downtown Sacramento

Roadway fatality

A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 in Sacramento after reportedly attempting to cross the freeway.

Motorists told California Highway Patrol dispatchers that a person was crossing the northbound side of the freeway just north of the Sutterville Road offramp from the center divide, walking against traffic and running again toward the center divide in the minutes before being fatally struck by the semi-trailer about 5:30 a.m.

The person’s identity was unknown, but witnesses said the victim was a woman.

The fatal collision shut down all lanes of northbound Interstate 5 at the Sutterville ramp, backing traffic beyond Fruitridge Road and forcing a Sig Alert between 5:45 a.m. and 8 a.m.
