Your Sacramento guide to events on a busy Martin Luther King Day

Monday’s Martin Luther King Day holiday is shaping up to be a busy one as Americans celebrate an icon of the Civil Rights movement, swear in a new and polarizing president and, if they are sports fans, cheer and jeer to four quarters of fun in both football and basketball.

We’ve put together a guide with everything you need to know about happenings in the Sacramento area and beyond.

Martin Luther King Day events on Monday

March for the Dream: Gather at Sacramento City College, 3835 Freeport Blvd., at 8 a.m. Marchers will walk from the West Lot to Sutterville Road, then along Freeport Boulevard to 13th Avenue, to Land Park Drive and down Broadway to 19th Street before looping back to the college via Freeport Boulevard.

South Sacramento Martin Luther King Day Caravan: For this event by the Bless Child Association, meet at Luther Burbank High School, 3500 Florin Road, at 8 a.m. The caravan will leave at 9:45 a.m., and the event will also include refreshments, guest speakers and a DJ.

The North Sacramento/Del Paso Heights Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Call to Action: The event begins at Grant Union High School, 1400 Grant Ave., at 8 a.m. Starting at 10 a.m., marchers will take South Avenue to Rio Linda Boulevard, then take Grand Avenue back to the high school. A business and resource fair will follow the march.

Road closures: To accommodate the marches, streets along their routes will be temporarily closed.

In the vicinity of the March for the Dream, these include 13th Avenue between Freeport Boulevard and Land Park Drive, Land Park Drive between 13th Avenue and Broadway, Broadway between 16th Street and Freeport Boulevard and Freeport Boulevard between Broadway and Sutterville Road.

For the North Sacramento/Del Paso Heights Martin Luther King Jr. Call to Action, closed roads along the route include portions of Grand Avenue, South Avenue and Rio Linda Boulevard in the vicinity of Grant Union High School.

Inauguration

Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated for a second, non-consecutive term at 9 a.m. PST Monday. The ceremony in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. PST. It will take place indoors because of anticipated cold weather in the nation’s capital, and will be shown on most news platforms.

Sports

College Football: Ohio State will face off against Notre Dame for the College Football Playoff championship game in Atlanta at 7:30 p.m. EST, 4:30 p.m. PST. The game will be shown on ESPN.

Basketball: The NBA is hosting eight games for its annual NBA on MLK Day lineup. The day starts with the Dallas Mavericks tipping off against the Charlotte Hornets in Charlotte at noon EST, or 9 a.m. PST. The Kings do not play Monday.
