Plumas searchers find body of Nevada man, 18, swept under frozen Feather River after fall
Plumas County searchers have recovered the body of a Nevada fisherman who was swept under an icy Feather River near Quincy on Tuesday, Plumas County sheriff’s officials announced Wednesday afternoon.
Searchers recovered Leonardo Mikelonis, 18, of Sparks, Nevada, a day after he had fallen into the waters near the Middle Fork of the Feather River in the town of Mabie. The town is located between Portola and Graeagle and 30 miles southeast of Quincy.
Plumas officials extended sympathies to Mikelonis’ family in a statement announcing the news.
“Sheriff Todd Johns and the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” said officials.
Plumas County sheriff’s deputies were called about the missing angler at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday, officials said in a news release.
The caller, who was fishing with two others, said one of the anglers, later identified as Mikelonis, had fallen into the river. The call said the man was believed to have been swept under the ice.
Plumas County Search and Rescue personnel, and search teams in the air and on foot from the California Highway Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service and the Graeagle Fire Protection District worked until dark Tuesday before calling off the search until first light Wednesday, officials said.
