Sacramento transgender community rallies after Trump executive orders. ‘A frightening time’

Sacramento’s transgender community held a unity rally at the California Capitol after President Donald Trump issued executive orders reducing the rights of trans people, banning them from the military and preventing federal funding for gender-affirming health care for trans minors.

“This is a frightening time to be transgender in America. In recent months we’ve seen an escalation of federal policies designed to strip us of dignity, of health care, of legal recognition,” said a rally organizer who identified themselves as Mina to the crowd, which organizers projected to be about 50 people.

On the day he started his second term as president, Trump issued a broad executive order that, among other things, rolled back federal legal protections for the trans community. A later order banned transgender people from serving in the military, and an order on Tuesday order barred federal funding for gender-affirming health care for minors.

“These policies are crafted to make us feel small, to push us out of public life, to tell us that we don’t belong in our own country,” said Mina.

“This rally is not the beginning, and it’s not the end — it’s a declaration, a promise that we will keep fighting, that we will push back against fear, against defeat, against those who wish to erase us out of existence.”
