Three adjacent West Sacramento motels are set to become homeless housing. See where
A West Sacramento motel will soon be turned into emergency homeless housing, adjacent to two others that are being renovated for the same purpose.
The West Sacramento City Council Wednesday unanimously approved the project.
The city will buy the motel property, located at 1841 Capitol Ave., for $2.5 million. The 20-room motel, called the West Wind Motel, is located adjacent to two other motels that are already being renovated for emergency homeless housing — the Pick Wick Motel and El Tejon Motel, a city staff report stated. Those two projects are set to be completed in the summer.
Meanwhile, two other motels being used for homeless housing, about a mile away near Capitol Bowl, may soon close and relocate, the staff report stated. Those motels, the Rodeway Inn and Flamingo, are in the area of the Grand Gateway Master Plan. The plan focuses on spurring mixed-use, walkable development.
To buy the West Wind Motel, the city will use funds from Measure G, a property tax voters approved in 2012, the report stated.
New affordable housing
A vacant lot at at the corner of 5th and G streets will soon become permanent affordable housing, the council also approved Wednesday.
The three-story project will include 35 affordable units, including about eight reserved for people with visual impairments, due to a grant from Alta California Regional Center, according to a city staff report that did not name the developer. The project will also include services and accommodations for the residents who are blind or visually impaired.
The project will be built using funds from federal, state, and Yolo County Housing Authority sources. Alta is also funding $800,000 for the project.
It will not include parking.
The “operative” will be the same as the developer for the Huddle on 5th, the report stated. That 19-unit apartment building at 221 5th St., which opened in November in West Sacramento, houses single-parent families.
