You can visit more than 20 Sacramento-area museums for free. Here’s how to get tickets

The start of March is a great time for art lovers and science geeks in the Sacramento area.

More than 20 museums in the capital region are offering free admission to the public during the first weekend of March during Free Museum Weekend.

The event returning for its 27th year.

Ticket reservations are required, and no-cost passes to some popular museums — including the Aerospace Museum of California, the California State Railroad Museum and the Crocker Art Museum — were already sold out as of early Monday afternoon.

However, there were still plenty of free tickets available for museums including Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and the California Automobile Museum.

When is Free Museum Weekend in Sacramento?

Free Museum Weekend 2025 is on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2.

Some museums are only offering free admission on Saturday, and opening hours vary. You can check a museum’s hours and the days it is participating on the Free Museum Weekend website.

How can I get free tickets to Sacramento-area museums?

You must pre-register online to get free tickets, according to the Free Museum Weekend website.

Otherwise, you will need to pay the full admission price, organizers said.

Space is limited and ticket availability for each museum may vary.

If you need to cancel your ticket or reserved too many, you can contact the Free Museum Weekend organizer so the tickets can be re-released to the public.

You can contact the organizer for the museum and date you selected via the ticket listing page.

Sacramento Regional Transit is offering free bus and light rail rides to participating museums on Free Museum Weekend.

You can ride free by presenting SacRT’s Free Museum Weekend flyer to a bus driver or light rail fare inspector.
