Trendy clothing store chain Forever 21 is closing another store in the Sacramento area after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Forever 21 will shut its doors at Arden Fair mall, 1689 Arden Way in Sacramento.

The fast-fashion pioneer announced plans in February to close at least 200 locations across the United States as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

Here’s what to know:

What is Forever 21?

Forever 21, formerly Fashion 21, was founded in 1984 by South Korean couple Do Won Chang and Jin Sook Chang.

The company describes itself as a “fashion industry leader making the latest trends accessible to all while inspiring unique style and confidence.”

Forever 21 started with a single store in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

It’s since expanded to more than 350 U.S. locations and more than 540 locations across the globe, as well as online sales.

What does clothing store sell?

Forever 21 sells women’s and men’s clothing as well as children’s apparel, often collaborating with major brands such as NBA, Compton Cowboys, Bratz and Juicy Couture.

The retailer offers a variety of footwear that includes boots, sandals, heels and sneakers.

Also for sale are accessories including jewelry, purses, backpacks, belts and hats, as well as home decor and beauty products.

Why is Forever 21 closing Sacramento-area locations?

Forever 21’s U.S. operating company recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in six years.

The company cited competition from online retailers such as Shein and Temu as one of the reasons behind the filing.

“While we have evaluated all options to best position the company for the future, we have been unable to find a sustainable path forward, given competition from foreign fast fashion companies, which have been able to ...undercut our brand on pricing and margin, as well as rising costs, economic challenges impacting our core customers, and evolving consumer trends,” Brad Sell, chief financial officer of F21 OpCo, said in a March 16 news release.

When Forever 21 first filed for bankruptcy in 2019, the company emphasized that it did not expect to fully exit major U.S. markets, according to records filed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

Now, Sell said, the company will have “an orderly wind down of operations.”

“Decisions about which store will ultimately close are ongoing, pending further discussions with landlords and potential buyers,” Sell said in a statement.

Where is Forever 21 store at Arden Fair?

Forever 21 is located on the first floor of Arden Fair.

The store neighbors a T-Mobile cell phone store and is in front of Champs Sports, LensCrafters eye wear store and Pandora jewelry store locations.

When is the last day for mall location?

Arden Fair has not been formally notified of an official closing date for Forever 21, according to Nathan Spradlin, the mall’s senior marketing manager.

What’s on sale?

As of Tuesday, Forever 21 was liquidating its merchandise at the Arden Fair location, a Forever employee said.

All items in the store were 20% off and clearance items were marked 60% off, the employee said.

On the Forever 21 site, the store will continue to honor customer gift cards and store credit through April 15. All online and in-person sales are final.

“Our stores will remain open for the time being and we will continue to fulfill customer orders placed online,” Sell said in a statement on the Forever 21 site.

Are other local stores closing?

According to its website, Forever 21 has 58 stores in California, including two in the Sacramento area.

Forever 21 is also closing its location at 1300 Folsom Blvd. in Folsom in the Folsom Premium Outlets and liquidating store assets.

As of February, there was no specific closing date for Forever 21’s Folsom store, as previously reported by The Sacramento Bee.
