How stressed out are Sacramento workers? New survey looks at burnout in US cities

Are you feeling overwhelmed at work? If so, you are not alone.

Sacramento workers have some of the highest rates of work-related burnout in the country, according to a new survey by marketing agency dNovo Group published on Wednesday, March 19.

The agency gave 100 cities across the United States a “burnout index” score out of 100, using a combination of weighted metrics that impact worker burnout to come up with a score.

Here’s where Sacramento and other California cities ranked:

What is worker burnout?

Work-related burnout is a type of stress linked to work conditions, such as having too much to do, workplace conflict or struggles with work-life balance, according to the Mayo Clinic

Some of the effects of job-related burnout include trouble focusing on work, going to work or getting started with work, as well of changing sleep habits and physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach issues, according to researchers at the medical center.

What causes burnout?

According to dNovo Group, in-person work requirements are a significant contributor to worker burnout.

About 31% of in-person office workers reported feeling burnout “often” or “always,” the survey showed, compared to 24% of remote workers and 27% of hybrid employees.

More than two-thirds of surveyed workers said they believe their work-related burnout would be lessened if they could work from home, and 66% said they’d likely look for a new job if they were required to work entirely in person.

On March 3, California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all state government workers to return to the office four days per week.

Hundreds of employees protested the order, saying it would harm their personal and professional lives.

Other factors impacting burnout, the dNovo Group said, include paid time off, average hours worked and commute times.

How high is job-related burnout is Sacramento?

Sacramento has the second-highest levels of worker burnout among cities in the United States, lagging only behind Phoenix, according to dNovo Group.

California’s capital city scored an 80 out of 100 on the burnout index.

In comparison, Arizona’s state capital, Phoenix, got an 82.

What about other California cities?

A total of 17 California cities landed on the dNovo Group’s list of U.S. cities with the most-stressed out workers, with Los Angeles landing at No. 4 overall.

Other California cities ranked lower, with San Francisco landing at No. 10 and Fresno coming in at No. 32. San Diego was No. 54.
