Where are cheapest eggs in Sacramento area? Milk? We compared 16 grocery stores

With Easter only a few weeks away, California residents may be wondering whether they’ll be able to afford an egg hunt — or make any of the sweet treats associated with the spring holiday.

The prices of eggs, milk and other basic ingredients have soared in the United States in 2025, forcing shoppers recalculate their grocery budgets.

After helping shoppers find the best deals at Sacramento-area grocery stores in February, The Bee is back to help you get the best bang for your buck.

We visited 16 grocery stores and one members-only warehouse in the Sacramento area and priced five cooking essentials to find the best deals.

Here’s what we discovered:

Safeway, 2851 Del Paso Blvd. in Sacramento, had a posted notice on Thursday, March 27, 2025 limiting customers to only purchasing two egg products.

Why are eggs so expensive in California right now?

Since highly pathogenic avian influenza surfaced in the United States in 2022, millions of chickens and turkeys have been killed at poultry ranches across California to stop the contagious virus from spreading.

Meanwhile, hundreds of California dairies have been quarantined due to bird flu.

Multiple products tied to the H5N1 virus have been recalled — from raw milk to pet food.

The outbreak, which prompted California Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in December, has contributed to widespread shortages of egg and dairy products.

Experts say it’s unlikely chickens or eggs infected with the bird flu could enter the food supply chain, The Fresno Bee previously reported.

The foods are still safe to eat as long as they are fully cooked.

How have egg and dairy prices changed since February?

In January, egg costs across the nation increased more than 150% compared to January 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.

However, nationwide egg prices showed a steady decline in March, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In California, the standard price for large shell eggs decreased by $1.13 to $6.05 per dozen, the agency said in its official Agriculture Egg Market Overview for March.

U.S. butter and cheese costs also dropped slightly in March, the USDA’s National Dairy Products Sales Report showed.

Egg prices have decreased overall at Sacramento-area supermarkets, according to an analysis by The Bee, with the price of a dozen large white eggs at one local Walmart store dropping by 15% in March compared to the previous month.

Local prices for butter and cheddar cheese also decreased month to month, The Bee found. A pound of unsalted butter sold at a Sacramento Safeway store was 66% cheaper in March than in February.

Not all dairy products saw price cuts at local grocery stores.

The price of a gallon of 2% milk at Target in Sacramento increased by 23% since February, The Bee’s analysis showed.
