Teen dies after SUV swerves to avoid Highway 70 crash, rolls in Yuba County embankment

Police tape at crime scene

A 14-year-old boy died Saturday after a vehicle carrying an Olivehurst family overturned off Highway 70 near Linda in Yuba County, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers responded about 3:35 p.m. to a solo-vehicle crash north of Feather River Boulevard in an unincorporated area of the county.

Emergency crews found a Honda Pilot about 50 feet down a dirt embankment. According to the CHP, the crash occurred after another SUV made an unsafe lane change, causing the Pilot to veer off the roadway and overturn.

The 14-year-old boy was unresponsive when personnel arrived. First responders attempted lifesaving measures and transported him to Adventist Health and Rideout hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was expected to be released by the Sutter County Coroner’s Office in the coming days.

The Pilot was driven by a 53-year-old man; a 47-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy were also in the vehicle. The driver and younger boy reported pain but were not hospitalized, the CHP said.

Investigators are seeking the driver of a silver or white SUV with stickers on the rear window that may have contributed to the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP Yuba-Sutter office at 530-645-6200.
