Meet the Gold Diggers: Sacramento River Cats reveal alternate name and more
The Sacramento River Cats unveiled a new alternative identity that pays homage to the Sacramento region’s history of discovering gold.
The team announced Thursday afternoon their new alter ego, the Sacramento Gold Diggers, and said they’re entering their “golden era.”
Gold was first discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, nearly 50 miles from Sacramento, in 1848. Now, the River Cats are honoring that heritage and incorporating it into their game day threads for a limited number of games. They will debut the new jersey on April 19 against the Salt Lake Bees.
“Inspired by the regional history of the California Gold Rush, this new identity offers a connection to the significant impact of this era when Sacramento grew as the closest major city to the gold fields,” the team said in a news release.
The new alternate name is a double-entendre that the team said “brings playful and cheeky elements” to its identity.
The team’s new name comes with a new logo — a miner named Dugg who rocks a gold tooth, a slick smile and a wink, while holding a pickaxe made out of a baseball bat. The team jerseys are an ode to 19th century fashion, donning all-black threads with gold-pinstripes between the seams.
The team’s new hat, which resembles a dollar sign, includes an “S” for Sacramento with a baseball bat going down the middle.
Sacramento will wear the Gold Diggers alternate jerseys five times this season: April 19, May 15, June 26, July 26 and Sept. 4.
The team said a limited release of Gold Diggers merchandise is available for purchase online at www.ondeckshoponline.com. New item releases are expected throughout the season, the team said.
