Warm weekend

Weekend temperatures in the Sacramento area will be near or slightly below normal for early August, according to the National Weather Service. Today is forecast to be sunny, with a high near 90. Sunday is expected to reach 93 degrees, which is normal for this time of the year. That’s well below the record high for today, which was 110 degrees in 1990, the weather service reports.

Tomato Festival in downtown Woodland

Salsa and cooking competitions will be highlights of Woodland’s eighth annual Tomato Festival, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today on Main Street in the city’s historic downtown. Those attending will have an opportunity to vote for the best restaurant salsa in Woodland, and local chefs will compete in an “Iron Chef” style cooking competition.

Midtown block party during Second Saturday

Midtown’s Summer Block Party continues from 4 to 9 p.m. on 20th Street between K and J streets in Sacramento. The free concert series features musicians, experimental art exhibits, artists, vendors and other activities. Entertainers scheduled to perform are Trails and Ways, Sunmonks, Tiaras and Young Aundee.

Banana Festival in Land Park

Banana Viva Las Vegas is the sixth annual Sacramento Banana Festival’s theme. This year’s celebration is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at William Land Park, 3900 Land Park Drive. The festival showcases culture, diversity, art, food, health and community. Activities include live entertainment, banana dishes, a chef challenge, a 5K run or walk, a health pavilion, carnival games and rides, a fashion show, exhibits and more.

Assemblyman co-hosts art show, open house

Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, is co-sponsoring a Second Saturday Art Show and Open House at Capitol Place, 915 L St., Sacramento. The Royal Chicano Air Force, Sol Collective, Kombucha Kulture, Crest Café, Track 7 Brewing, Hoppy Brewing and Rubicon Brewing are also sponsoring the event. The event is free, but a reservation is required at http://asmdc.org/members/a07.

Things to do

  • A craft and rummage sale features everything from vintage wear to craft desserts from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Washington Neighborhood Center, 400 16th St., Sacramento. Attendees can shop and enjoy a communal atmosphere. Barrio Arte Program hosts a youth and older adult art workshop.
  • The free Weekend Concerts in the Park series continues at Carmichael Park, 5750 Grant Ave., Carmichael. The group On Air is the scheduled performer from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • The California State Home and Garden Show continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J St. The event showcases products, craftsmen, workshops and landscaping ideas.
