X Games calls off inaugural Sacramento event in 2025. What happened?
The X Games won’t be held in Sacramento this summer after all.
X Games on Friday announced its August event, which was slated for Cal Expo, has been postponed with no given to allow for organizers to focus on the launch of its new “X Games League.”
This comes after the premier extreme sports event announced in December it would be held in Sacramento for the next three summers. The 2025 event was planned to be a celebration of its 30th anniversary and bring an estimated 100,000 patrons to Cal Expo, organizing partners including the fairground venue, Visit Sacramento and California Dreamin’ Entertainment said last year.
“As we prepare to launch the X Games League later this year, we’ve taken a step back to reexamine how we deliver the most exceptional, high-energy experience for our athletes, fans, and host cities,” said Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games, in a statement. “We determined that postponing Sacramento allows us to give the launch of the X Games League the full focus it deserves.
“Sacramento has been an incredible host City and we’re grateful for the support and enthusiasm from the city,” Bloom continued. “This isn’t goodbye — it’s a strategic pause. We’re committed to returning with an even bigger vision when the time is right.”
The X Games held a news conference to announce a three-year agreement to hold the annual X Games in Sacramento through 2027. Organizers have not said whether future the 2026 or 2027 are still slated for the capital region.
“As stated, Sacramento remains a valued partner and part of the long-term vision for X Games,” X Games spokesman Adam Fenton said in an email to The Sacramento Bee.
The creation of the X Games League was announced last June. It’s an extreme sports competition with a team format, unlike the traditional X Games. The X Games League, or XGL, will be held year-round at international locations. It’s expected to have a similar format to Formula 1, organizers said.
