Driver killed after crashing into tree in Elk Grove, police say

Roadway fatality

A driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in Elk Grove near the intersection of Backer Ranch Road and Elk Grove Boulevard, police said. Police said the driver was a 23-year-old man and the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The Elk Grove Police Department reported the driver collided into a tree around 5:30 a.m. Officers discovered the single occupant was deceased when they arrived. No other cars were involved in the crash, the Police Department said in social media posts Saturday morning.

In an update posted Saturday afternoon, police said that vehicle, a Lexus, collided with another car in a separate crash minutes before the Lexus struck a tree just west of Backer Ranch Road, just before 5:30 a.m. Police described that earlier crash as a non-injury hit-and-run.

Police did not report any injuries at the first collision. Traffic investigators believe alcohol and speed were factors in the fatal collision.

Traffic detectives were on the scene of the crash Saturday morning conducting an investigation, the department said. Elk Grove Boulevard between Cresleigh Parkway and Backer Ranch Road was closed while authorities investigate but was back open as of Saturday afternoon.

Police requested that anyone with information about the incident contact the department’s traffic bureau at 916-478-8143.
