Two killed after car loses control, strikes light pole in east Elk Grove

Roadway fatality

Two motorists died Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash that shut down a section of Waterman Road in east Elk Grove for several hours, police said.

The wreck was reported around 5 a.m. by a passerby who found the crash site just south of Sheldon Road, according to Sgt. Jason Jimenez, a spokesperson for the Elk Grove Police Department. The vehicle was traveling northbound on Waterman when it lost control and struck a light pole, he said.

Both adult occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters, Jimenez said.

Police closed Waterman Road between Elliot Springs Drive and Sheldon Road in both directions while emergency crews responded and conducted an investigation. The road reopened shortly before 11 a.m.

Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, Jimenez said, but investigators were working to determine whether drugs or alcohol also played a role.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the names of the motorists after their identities are confirmed and next of kin are notified.
