Carmichael woman killed, man seriously hurt in solo crash on I-80 near Penryn
A 21-year-old woman from Carmichael was killed and a man was seriously injured Thursday evening in a solo-vehicle crash on Interstate 80.
According to the California Highway Patrol’s Auburn area office, the collision occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the westbound side of I-80, just east of Penryn Road in unincorporated Placer County. CHP investigators said a 1997 Toyota 4Runner was traveling in the right lane when it may have experienced a tire issue.
The CHP said the vehicle veered off the road, overturned onto its side and struck a tree.
Emergency personnel transported the 27-year-old male driver, also from Carmichael, to a hospital with serious injuries. The female passenger — who has not been identified by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office coroner division — was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both occupants had been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, CHP officials said.
