Thousands of demonstrators joined a “No Kings” protest at the state Capitol in Sacramento on Saturday, part of a nationwide protest movement against President Donald Trump and his administration’s policies that coincided with a military parade in Washington, D.C., and the president’s birthday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, attendance at the event exceeded the 5,000-person advance estimate provided by organizing group Indivisible Sacramento, which is part of a national coalition of groups founded after President Trump’s election to oppose his policies.

Visibly increased law enforcement presence from the California Highway Patrol, which protects the Capitol grounds, and the Sacramento Police Department was on hand for the peaceful event.
