A man involved in a violent three-car crash Sunday in downtown Sacramento later died at the hospital, said Sacramento Police Department officials.

Police on Monday continue to investigate the deadly crash at 16th and E streets in the city’s Mansion Flats neighborhood that happened just after 7 p.m.

The deceased, identified by police only as an adult male, was taken with critical injuries to the hospital where he later died, said Sacramento Police Department officials. The other motorists involved appeared to have escaped injury, said police. The

Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the man’s identity once family members had been notified.

Surveillance video of the scene aired by CBS Sacramento showed a black sport utility vehicle driving on 16th Street at high speed against a red light and through the intersection with E Street. The SUV appeared to clip the front of a gold-colored sedan in the intersection before plowing through a second dark-colored coupe that was turning onto 16th from E.

The wreck closed the road to traffic for several hours as emergency responders tended to the victims and investigators began their work.

Traffic investigators continue to seek witnesses to the wreck. Police are asking anyone with credible information to call dispatchers at 916-808-5471.
