Cockroaches close Sacramento bakery a second time. What else did inspectors find?
Sacramento County health inspectors closed a local bakery for the second time in less than a month due to cockroaches, flies and other food safety issues.
Inspectors also shut down a Sacramento grocery store for food safety violations ranging from roaches to a leaky sink, and cited a liquor store for multiple health issues related to its restroom.
While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide.
A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends the health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination.
In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection.
The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually, with 97% of establishments passing, county spokesperson Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee.
Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said.
Here are the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, June 26, through Wednesday, July 2, as of Thursday afternoon:

Sacramento bakery closed a second time for cockroaches
L’Avenue Hats and Bakery, 9645 Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento, had five major food safety violations on Tuesday, July 1.
After closing L’Avenue Hats and Bakery on June 10 due to cockroaches, Sacramento County health inspectors shut down the local bake shop a second time after finding more evidence of a roach infestation.
On July 1, health inspectors found three cockroaches, including one dead adult cockroach, on the floor below the dry storage rack near the dough preparation area.
There were approximately 15 to 20 live flies in the kitchen.
The bakery didn’t have a food safety certification or California food handler cards on hand for inspectors to review. These are repeat violations.
The bakery had improperly propped open a back door.
Meanwhile, the bakery’s oven had been modified and retrofitted with a water supply line and multiple spray nozzles.
L’Avenue Hat’s and Bakery was reinspected on Wednesday, July 2, and passed with green placard.
The Sacramento Bee reached out to L’Avenue Hat’s and Bakery for comment on Thursday, July 3, but bakery representatives were not available for comment.
Local supermarket shut down due to roaches, food safety
East West Foods, 4411 47th Ave. in Sacramento, had four health food violations on Monday, June 30.
Health inspectors shut down the international grocery store after finding a total of 13 German cockroaches, including 10 live cockroaches in an unused meat bandsaw.
They discovered two dead cockroaches on a table near the hand sink and one dead roach on a pipe under the hand sink.
An employee told inspectors that the three-compartment sink had not been used for warewashing for the past two weeks due to a leak.
Cardboard was reused as a lining on the floor, dry storage and under the register.
The supermarket also had an expired health permit.
The Sacramento grocery store was reinspected on June 30 and received a yellow placard after health inspectors spotted 11 major violations.
This time, health inspectors saw liquid drip from an evaporator drain pan onto a piece of goat meat. The goat meat was discarded and the tray was removed from the location.
Health inspectors also cited the store for not cleaning and sanitizing the meat band saw and meat preparation areas every four hours.
There was a water bottle with an unapproved screw-top lid stored on the prep table and meat preparation area.
Goat liver, ribeye, ground beef and a whole raw chicken were outside of proper holding temperatures.
East West Food had yet to be reinspected as of Thursday, July 3.
The Bee reached out to East West Food on Thursday, July 3, but store representatives were not available for comment.
Sacramento liquor store cited for vermin, restroom issues
Bros Liquor, 3510 Auburn Blvd. in Sacramento, was cited for four health food violations on Monday, June 30.
Health inspectors gave the Sacramento liquor store a yellow placard after discovering “vermin activity.”
The inspectors found 10 nymphs and two adult live German cockroaches inside the store’s restroom on top of the water heater. However, they did not spot cockroaches inside the retail area or anywhere else in the facility.
Bros Liquor had stored an unapproved household spray bottle with pesticide inside the restroom, and there were no paper towels.
The restroom door was propped open. This was a third repeat violation.
Health inspectors also cited the store after finding “loose rubber coving” inside the restroom, a repeat violation.
Bros Liquor was reinspected on Tuesday, July 1, and received an additional yellow placard for repeat violations including German cockroach activity.
During the reinspection, health inspectors also found a deteriorated weather strip beneath the back door.
Bros Liquor had yet to be inspected a third time as of Thursday, July 3.
