Del Rio Trail bridge replacement expected to open this year, Sacramento says
Bikers and pedestrians in Sacramento will be able to cross Interstate 5 on a rebuilt bridge linking the Del Rio Trail to the Sacramento River Bike Trail by the end of the year, city officials said Wednesday.
The bridge has been closed since the Del Rio Trail, a nearly 5-mile trail that stretches from Land Park to Meadowview, opened with fanfare in May 2024. Officials in August rejected a contractor’s original work on the revamped former railroad bridge, saying it did not meet requirements for the materials and construction.
A city news release Wednesday said work to remove the structure over Interstate 5 and Riverside Boulevard would start “in the coming weeks.”
“I want to acknowledge the community’s frustration with this process, and I share in this frustration,” City Councilmember Rick Jennings, whose district encompasses the Del Rio Trail, said in a statement included in the news release. “However, by focusing on working with the contractor, we were able to begin construction before resorting to the delays inherent in litigation.”
The construction on the new overpass will cause nighttime lane closures on Interstate 5, according to city officials. Adjacent Riverside Boulevard may be closed in the area during some nights and days, but not during commuting times, the news release said.
