Yolo County coroner confirms 7 killed in deadly Esparto fireworks blasts

The seven workers identified by family members as the victims of last week’s fatal series of explosions triggered at a fireworks facility in Esparto were confirmed Friday by the Yolo County Coroner’s Office.

Based on DNA analysis of human remains recovered from the blast site over the weekend, the coroner’s office confirmed that the following victims died in the incident:

  • Angel Mathew Voller, 18, of Stockton
  • Carlos Javier Rodriguez-Mora, 43, of San Andreas
  • Neil Justin Li, 41, of San Francisco
  • Joel Jeremias Melendez, 28, of Sacramento
  • Christopher Goltiao Bocog, 45, of San Francisco
  • Jesús Manaces Ramos, 18, of San Pablo
  • Jhony Ernesto Ramos, 22, of San Pablo

Family members identified the victims in the days after the fire and subsequent explosions that sparked surrounding grass fires and rattled businesses and homes in Esparto the night of July 1.

All seven are believed to have been working at the facility, which had ties to Devastating Pyrotechnics and Blackstar Fireworks, at the time of the incident, although many questions remain about what caused the explosions.

The state fire marshal’s office, a branch of Cal Fire, has taken over the investigation, including whether local permits were properly issued and upheld.

The coroner’s office completed the autopsies Thursday, and each official cause of death is pending toxicology results, authorities said.
