No Evangeline’s Halloween: Popular costume shop to remain closed for all of 2025
Evangeline’s Costume Mansion in Old Sacramento will not reopen the rest of 2025, according to a social media post made by the store on Friday.
A fire closed the store on June 17. Due to significant damage, the first floor of the three-story mansion was “extensively damaged,” the store’s owners wrote. This floor included gift shop items and other costume accessories. The upstairs Costume Mansion sustained “only light smoke damage.”
Restoration and repairs will keep the store closed the rest of the year.
“Sadly, we will miss the 2025 Halloween season and cannot accept online orders until we reopen,” according to the post.
In June, the Sacramento Fire Department described “cold, dense smoke” which came from the store, according to previous Bee reporting. Store owner Deborah Chaussé stated the fire mostly likely resulted from an electrical problem. No one was hurt in the blaze.
The woman-owned mansion celebrated its 50th birthday last year and is located in the historic Howard House, which was established in Old Sacramento in 1850. The store houses more than 3,500 costumes, Chaussé previously told The Bee.
Despite the existing damage, Evangeline’s plans to reopen in 2026, its social media post stated.
“When we are ready, you can look forward to a bright and shiny novelty and gift shop — and an even more magical Costume Mansion,” Evangeline’s owners wrote. “Thank you for all the outpouring of support that lifted our spirits in immeasurable ways...look forward to seeing you in 2026!”
