Best Black-owned restaurants in Sacramento? See top 5 eateries according to Yelp

From classic Southern cuisine and craft beer to fine dining to authentic Jamaican cuisine, the Sacramento area is home to dozens of Black-owned restaurants.

Many enjoy loyal fan followings thanks to their welcoming environments, delicious cuisine and passionate owners.

The Sacramento Bee searched popular review website Yelp to find top-rated Black-owned eateries in the Sacramento area.

Here were five of our favorites:

Why do Sacramento foodies love Fixins Soul Kitchen?

Fixins Soul Kitchen, 3428 Third Ave in Sacramento, “celebrates the history and traditions of African American culture in an inclusive environment that welcomes everyone,” the restaurant said on its website.

The restaurant is owned by former Sacramento Mayor and NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson and his wife Michelle.

The full-service soul food restaurant serves lunch, dinner and brunch.

Fixins Soul Kitchen’s main menu features classic Southern cuisine including oxtails, fried chicken, gumbo, sandwiches and salads. Plates range in price from $16 to $29.

The restaurant also offers chicken and waffles for $9 to $21, and $6 side dishes that includes collard greens, charred okra and macaroni and cheese.

Have a sweet tooth? You can get peach cobbler, red velvet cake or banana pudding for $11.

Brunch menu items, which cost $9 to $21, include pancakes, a fried chicken omelet and biscuits and gravy.

The restaurant has an average Yelp rating of 4.3 stars, with more than 3,300 reviews.

“This is a ‘Get a Room’ experience, ya all,” Yelp reviewer Laurene V. of Chico wrote. “The food here is freakin’ delicious!”

“The outdoor ambiance was perfect, and the service was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable,” Yelp reviewer Rebecca B. of Sacramento wrote. “The grits were the best I’ve ever had ... and the chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful.”

I’ll definitely be back. (I) highly recommend this place,” the reviewer added.

Fixins Soul Kitchen is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, with brunch available 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Roseville restaurant has seafood, jambalaya

Q1227 Restaurant, 1151 Galleria Blvd., Suite 1175, at the Westfield Galleria mall in Roseville, is known for its “chef-driven dining experience.”

Quentin “Chef Q” Bennett has cooked for a variety of celebrities including former President Bill Clinton, Steve Harvey and stars from “The Jamie Foxx Show.”

The menu at Q1227 includes appetizers such as ahi tuna nachos, fried lobster bites and coconut curry mussels and entrees ranging from jambalaya to spicy chicken pasta and beef Wellington. Prices for starters range from $16 to $38, while entrees cost $24 to $58.

Options for desserts include Italian tiramisu, bread pudding and peach cobbler.

The brunch menu includes dishes such as a short rib hash, lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes and crab cake benedict. Prices range from $2 to $28.

Q1227 has an average Yelp rating of 4.2 stars.

Yelp reviewer Lin L. of Sacramento called the food “excellent,” singling out the gumbo, wagyu burger and branzini for special praise. “Delicious, exquisite and on point,” the reviewer wrote.

Q1227 is open 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 3 to 10 p.m. Friday. It’s open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Sacramento brewery Urban Roots serves up barbecue, beer

Craft brewery Urban Roots Brewing & Smokehouse, 1322 V St. in Sacramento, embodies three things: “Extraordinary people, beer and food,” according to the restaurant’s website.

Urban Roots was founded by co-owners Rob Archie and Peter Hoey in 2018.

USA Today readers voted the brewery one of the top 10 brewpubs in the nation in 2025.

Urban Roots’ menu includes barbecue favorites include pork belly, tri-tip and cheddarwrust as well as seafood options such as fried fish. Plates range from $7 to $99.95.

Customers have more than 10 options for sides including burnt end beans, elote salad and mac and cheese.

As of Tuesday, July 16, the list of draft beers is subject to change including a West Coast India pale ale, blonde ale and a fruited sour ale.

Urban Roots has an average Yelp rating of 4.2 stars.

Yelp reviewer Vicky T. of Santa Cruz said her group loved Urban Roots “so much we went twice.”

““The meat eaters loved everything they got,” the reviewer wrote, including brisket, chicken wings and cornbread.” “They were in heaven.”

Local Ethiopian restaurant specializes in healthy meals

Queen Sheba Ethiopian Cuisine, 1704 Broadway in Sacramento, seeks to serve “healthy and hearty meals” with all natural ingredients, according to the restaurant’s website.

Owner Zion Taddese opened the Ethiopian restaurant in 2004.

The popular Ethiopian restaurant’s menu includes chicken, lamb, spicy red lentils and yellow split peas. Prices range from $8 to $20 per plate.

Drink offerings include Ethiopian honey wine and imported lagers for $6 to $27.

Queen Sheba Ethiopian Cuisine has an average Yelp rating of 4.2 stars.

Yelp reviewer Rondell A. of Sacramento praised the Ethiopian restaurant’s “friendly service” and “cozy vibe.”

“I ordered the awaze beef tibbs, which was ... packed with flavor,” the reviewer wrote. “It came with injera, the spongy bread rolls, and those were amazing on their own too. I’m already looking forward to coming back and trying more dishes.”

“This is, hands down, one of my favorite places to eat,” Yelp reviewer Atija R. of Sacramento wrote. “Not only are the owner and staff beautiful, friendly people (but) the food is also very delicious.”

Queen Sheba Ethiopian Cuisine is open 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Sacramento eatery offers authentic Jamaican food

Dubplate Kitchen & Jamaican Cuisine, 3419 El Camino Ave. in Sacramento, has been serving up authentic Jamaican food since 2019.

Owner Wolete Atherley opened Dubplate Kitchen & Jamaican Cuisine in 2018.

The Caribbean restaurant offers a variety of entrees to choose from, including curry goat, jerk chicken, oxtail and ital stew. Prices range from $10 to $32.

The rest of the menu includes beef patties, veggie spring rolls and sweet dumplings, with prices ranging from $2.25 to $7.

Dubplate Kitchen & Jamaican Cuisine has an average Yelp rating of 4.3 stars.

“OMG, this is hands down the best Jamaican food I’ve ever had!” Yelp user Diana L. of Sacramento wrote in her review. “From the moment you walk in, the staff make you feel right at home. They’re always warm and welcoming, which adds so much to the overall experience.”

She said Dubplate Kitchen & Jamaican Cuisine “truly feels like a hidden gem.”

“Delicious. I am so glad I was finally able to try this place,” Yelp reviewer Alexa R. of Sacramento wrote. “The flavors are amazing and the portions are hefty.”
