A popular Irish pub is closing after a decade of business in the heart of the capital city.

Ownership reported on social media that the closure of Malt and Mash, at 715 K St. near Golden 1 Center and the Downtown Commons shopping plaza, represents a new beginning.

“Thank you Sacramento for a decade of great memories,” reads a farewell-thank you note posted on the Malt and Mash Instagram page. “A new era begins this fall, slainte.”

It is uncertain just what’s ahead. Malt and Mash owner Bob Simpson was not available when The Bee reached out for comment.

Simpson, a local industry veteran, also owns Townie, a bar at 710 K St., across from Malt and Mash and operates Parkside Sports Bar and Grill in Davis. Simpson is a former owner of Social Nightclub.

“Sacramento we love you and we are excited for our new venture coming this fall,” Malt and Mash said in a social media post.

An Instagram account with the handle “@parksidesac” surfaced under the original Malt and Mash post after an ABC10 reporter asked in a reply whether the new venue would be in the same location.

The Parkside Sacramento account responded, “yes it will.”

The account’s bio reads “new bar coming fall 2025,” which could signal that Simpson is opening a second Parkside Sports Bar and Grill.

Thanks and appreciation

Malt and Mash made its impact on the K Street corridor hosting different affairs including small concerts, and dating and networking events.

The original Malt and Mash goodbye post expressed appreciation for staff members, managers, bands, DJs and guests, both present and past, who have supported the bar and live music venue for the past nearly 10 years.

“Our thanks and appreciation to every past and present staff member and managers. Cheers to the bands and DJs that graced our stage,” read the Instagram post, which was also published to Facebook. “And most of all thank you to every guest that’s walked through our doors over the past decade.”

The venue was home to a selection of Irish beers and whiskeys, live music from bands of different genres including country, rock, banda and mariachi. When not hosting performances, the site hosts other events such as singles nights and speed dating events.
