Friends started an online fundraiser to support the family of a man who was killed Monday after he was struck by a light rail train while riding an electric scooter in midtown Sacramento.

The man — identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Rittick Kumar Gupta, 21 — was “a kind-hearted, generous and vibrant soul whose presence brought light into the lives of everyone he met,” two friends, Kabir Dua and Sayam Dhull, wrote in a letter on the GoFundMe campaign created Tuesday.

“This sudden and devastating loss has left his family and friends in shock and grief,” they added.

Sacramento police officers responded to the crash near the intersection of 19th and T streets around 1:45 p.m. Monday, according to Officer Allison Smith, a department spokesperson.

A security guard who works at an adjacent building previously told The Sacramento Bee she saw a person riding a scooter east on T Street, toward the train tracks, and heard the light rail train honking. The train was moving south, said Sgt. Dan Wiseman, another police spokesperson.

“We are organizing this fundraiser to help his family during this incredibly difficult time,” Dua and Dhull wrote on the GoFundMe page. “The funds raised will go toward funeral and memorial expenses, as well as providing some financial relief as they navigate through this painful chapter.”

By noon Wednesday, the fundraiser had received 185 donations totaling nearly $13,000, approaching half of its $30,000 goal.
