Are you looking to rent in California?

According to apartment website RentCafe, several cities in the Central and Sacramento Valley — including Sacramento, Elk Grove, Modesto and Fresno — offer the best bang for your buck.

RentCafe recently ranked the 200 largest cities in the United States where renters can get the most apartment space for $1,500 a month.

On average, $1,500 a month gets renters about 715 square feet of apartment space in the United States, RentCafe found.

In 63% of the nation’s 200 largest U.S. cities, renters enjoy more space than the national average, according to the study.

“If you’re a renter looking for spacious apartments on a budget, you have the best shot of finding them in the Midwest,” RentCafe said. “(That is) where renters can get the most square feet for a monthly rent of $1,500.”

How much will $1,500 rent get me in California?

According to RentCafe, living in California often comes at a steep cost and with limited living space.

“California dominates the list with 16 of the top 20 small cities where renters get limited space for $1,500 per month,” RentCafe said. “In fact, in three cities on the list, this budget is not even enough for a studio, which is a change compared to last year’s list, when there were no such situations.”

Cities known for their vibrant entertainment, high-tech opportunities and rich art scenes have the most expensive price tags.

In San Francisco, $1,500 a month only gets you about 325 square feet.

Pasadena and Glendale aren’t much better, offering just 423 and 429 square feet of space — roughly the size of an average studio apartment — for $1,500 in monthly rent.

Los Angeles renters get about 439 square feet for the same price.

In comparison, California’s most affordable cities offer more than double the space for $1,500 a month.
