  • Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire in two Victorians near 19th and N streets.
  • Flames spread rapidly through attics due to wood exteriors and close proximity.
  • One injury reported; both homes sustained attic, smoke and water damage.

A three-alarm fire ripped through the attics of two adjacent Victorian-style houses on the corner of 19th and N streets Monday morning.

When firefighters arrived just after 9 a.m., the blaze had already moved into the attics of both buildings, said Capt. Justin Sylvia, a spokesperson with the Sacramento Fire Department. One man sustained minor injuries when he punched through a glass window with his hand to make sure his brother got out of the building. Both men were already out by the time firefighters arrived, along with all the other occupants who were present when the fire started, Sylvia said.

Sylvia said the fire appeared to have started in between the 1300 block of 19th Street and the house behind it, on the 1800 block of N Street; the flames climbed up the walls and into the attics. He said that is not uncommon, given the wood exteriors of Victorians.

The property on 19th Street is three stories, and the property on N Street is two stories. One building has extensive charring on a staircase, and both units have severe damage to the attics, including holes that fire personnel cut in the course of extinguishing the fire. Sylvia said the damage to other interior floors was mostly smoke and water damage.

The responders called for a third alarm because of how extensively the flames had spread.

By noon, the fire was extinguished, and firefighters were shuffling unhurriedly in and out of the buildings. One street — 19th — was still closed to traffic.
