Galt man on probation arrested after knife threat, 3-hour standoff

Bars from a jail cell frame a door being locked.

A Galt man on probation was arrested Tuesday night after he allegedly threatened a family member with a knife, refused to surrender and prompted a standoff that lasted several hours until Galt police deployed less-than-lethal force and a K-9 to subdue him.

Officers responded around 6 p.m. to a 911 call from a home on the 200 block of Emerald Oak Drive. A caller reported a man under the influence had assaulted and threatened a relative with a knife, police said.

Responding officers evacuated the family and secured the area. No injuries were reported.

The suspect, identified as a 33-year-old man on probation, remained inside the residence and placed multiple calls to the police department’s communication center, police said. At one point, he told dispatchers he wanted to be shot by officers, the department said in a news release.

Two police crisis negotiators persuaded the man to exit the house. However, he continued holding the knife against himself and refused commands to drop it, officers said.

Three hours into the call, officers deployed less-lethal bean bag rounds and a K-9 unit to subdue him. The man was taken into custody, transported to a hospital for treatment and later booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.

According to jail logs, the man faces a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon, as well as resisting arrest. The man also faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance with two or more prior convictions connected with an unrelated warrant, jail logs said.

He’s being held in lieu of $1 million bail and is expected to arraigned in Sacramento Superior Court on Thursday.
