Coyote Fire burning in El Dorado County now 624 acres, 5% contained

The Coyote Fire in El Dorado County has grown to 624 acres with 5% containment as of Thursday, Cal Fire officials said, the fire burning in rugged terrain.

The blaze broke out in dense timber Wednesday afternoon near Coyoteville Lane and Cedar Creek Road, just east of Somerset, throwing up towering plumes of smoke and triggering evacuation warnings for a wide swath of land around the fire zone that extended north to Omo Ranch and south to the Amador County line.

The evacuation warnings from Omo Ranch Road south to Farnham Ridge Road affect about 50 people, according to El Dorado County Office of Emergency Services. No injuries have been reported.

The fire burning on densely forested land away from roads and in punishing heat has made for tough work for fire crews. Fire planners launched their attack on the Coyote Fire largely by air on Wednesday.

More than 1,250 firefighters were battling the blaze on the ground and in the air over the remote area, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection officials said in a Thursday morning update.

“Ground and air resources will continue to aggressively battle the fire throughout the day,” said Cal Fire officials.

AlertCalifornia camera images showed clear skies over the area of the fire Thursday morning, a contrast to the smoke plumes that signaled the start of the Coyote Fire less than 24 hours earlier.

But the fire continues to slowly chew its way east, climbing from 554 acres as of Cal Fire’s 6:50 a.m. update to 624 acres at 8:45 a.m.
