A psychiatrist working in a California prison facility was attacked and hospitalized Friday, state corrections authorities said. The attack took place at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the psychiatrist was attacked by Jose L. Ramirez, a 35-year-old man serving a life sentence for first-degree murder who was transferred to the facility from Los Angeles County in 2019.

Ramirez allegedly used a homemade weapon in the attack, which was recovered by a prison guard who came to the psychiatrist’s aid. Ramirez has been moved to restrictive housing and the case will be forwarded to the Solano County District Attorney’s Office for potential criminal charges, CDCR reported in a news release.

The psychiatrist was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. He is expected to make a full recovery and be released shortly, according to CDCR.

The California Medical Facility is the largest hospital for incarcerated people in the state. The facility houses medically compromised individuals and includes a 400-bed psychiatric treatment center.
