134 mph — CHP cites Corvette driver after high-speed sprint on Highway 50
The driver of a Chevrolet Corvette who used Highway 50 as a personal test track was stopped for reckless driving after a California Highway Patrol officer clocked the motorist at speeds topping 130 mph.
Officers from the patrol’s East Sacramento office told the tale of the Wednesday morning incident posted to Facebook. A photo from the citing officer’s speed gun showed the digitized numbers glowing red: 134 mph.
“The driver of this Corvette decided that being late for work was worth driving 134 mph on US-50,” the post read. “At that speed, there’s no room for error — reaction times are cut in half, stopping distances increase exponentially, and the consequences of even a minor mistake can be deadly.”
Patrol officials said the Wednesday incident should remind motorists of the dangers of excessive speed, urging drivers to plan aheadand slow down when they are behind the wheel.
“Running late is never worth risking your life — or the lives of others on the road,” the CHP’s post read. “Reckless driving isn’t just dangerous, it’s irresponsible, and illegal.”
